Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements

Mopac Photo

The Environmental Assessment (EA) for the MoPac Improvement Project includes approximately $5 million worth of proposed bicycle and pedestrian facility improvements. The bicycle and pedestrian accommodations described in Section 3.6.2 in Appendix F & G of the EA were developed in close consultation with the City of Austin, TxDOT, CAMPO, FHWA and leadership and representatives of the bicycling community.

A number of meetings and project tours were conducted during development of the EA to identify the highest priority needs for the corridor, resulting in solutions that provide connectivity between existing facilities, fill in gaps where they exist along the corridor and supplement access to parallel connections.Bike Trail at Far West Boulevard

The EA includes almost 3 miles of shared use path including a 2-mile section on the west side of MoPAC from Walnut Creek Trail to the north end of Loop 360 and a 1-mile section that runs through the US 183 interchange and links Shoal Creek Boulevard to Neils Thompson Drive. Many of the facility improvements identified in the EA improve east/west connectivity at 13 MoPac cross streets. In addition, there are 4 miles of new sidewalk planned along the frontage roads between Parmer Lane and Anderson Lane, including curb ramps and pedestrian signal heads to better accommodate pedestrians and the disabled.

The team considered a request to construct an 11-mile continuous, grade seperated shared-use path within the MoPac corridor. However, it was determined that due to the high cost and construction impacts resulting from right-of-way limitations south of RM 2222, a properly designed facility of this type would best be approached as a stand-alone project once a funding source is identified.
